
She does not want to admit that she fucked up with the parenting thing. You will never again have anybody this personally involved with your success or failure in life, nobody this intensely invested in your happiness. It feels smothering but given that it’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing you can’t afford to take it for granted. Sure, your father is invested too, but with him it’s less personal, there is less of a motivation, the validation to be had from you is limited. With her it’s not just about the ego it’s the conscience and the desire to feel that you are grateful and realize what an awesome thing she has done for you.
No spouse, no friend, no child will ever see you as their personal genetic representative on this planet, their own work of art. Basically, it’s the one certain good thing that most people have in their lives, ignoring it is a sign of really bad judgment that is sure to affect all your other decisions as well. To dismiss the one person who has a stake in your welfare is a sign that you are on your way to being a fuck-up.
